Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) officers from various units have undergone training on international humanitarian law (IHL), aimed at strengthening their understanding of the rules governing military operations during armed conflicts.
The one-day training was organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and focused on how humanitarian law principles can be applied in military planning, decision-making and the conduct of operations.
The session was officially opened by RDF Deputy Spokesperson Lt Col Simon Kabera, alongside ICRC Rwanda Head of Delegation Aurélie Grange.
The training covered key areas including the protection of civilians, the responsibilities of armed forces during hostilities, operational planning and the lawful use of force.
Officers were also taken through fundamental IHL principles such as distinguishing between civilians and combatants, ensuring military force is used only when necessary and proportionate, and adopting measures to reduce the impact of armed conflicts on affected populations.
The training encouraged RDF officers to integrate international humanitarian law into their daily duties and military decision-making processes to promote compliance with global standards during operations.
