The Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC) has called for stricter oversight of food and beverages served at home celebrations, urging Rwandans planning to host social gatherings to notify local authorities in advance to help prevent foodborne illnesses and deaths linked to unsafe products.
The appeal was made by Minister of Local Government Dominique Habimana during the nationwide monthly Umuganda held in Kamonyi District, where officials also raised awareness about the dangers of consuming substandard alcoholic drinks, juices and traditional beverages.
Habimana said informing local authorities before hosting large gatherings would enable officials to advise organisers on proper food preparation, hygiene and beverage handling, helping to ensure that meals served to guests meet basic health and safety standards.
“We are asking anyone planning to host people at home or prepare food and drinks for an event to inform local leaders so they can verify that the required health and safety standards are being followed before guests are served,” he said.
The minister noted that people producing beverages for commercial sale must comply with laws governing business operations and manufacturing, including obtaining the necessary licences and ensuring their products meet national quality standards.
He stressed that the government’s objective is not to discourage people from brewing or selling beverages, but to encourage safe production practices that protect public health.
Habimana also warned against the growing threat posed by unsafe alcoholic drinks and illicit substances, particularly among young people, saying such products can have fatal consequences.
“The greatest danger is that these products can cost lives. Young people should value their health and avoid alcohol abuse and drug use that can prevent them from achieving their full potential,” he said.
The July Umuganda was also marked by the recognition of communities that excelled in community development activities during the 2025–2026 fiscal year.
In Kamonyi District, where the minister joined residents in rehabilitating a football field in Ngamba Sector, Rugarika Sector was recognised for constructing four early childhood development classrooms. Gacurabwenge Sector was honoured for building houses for three vulnerable families, while Musambira Sector was commended for constructing administrative offices for Rubanga Village.
Habimana praised citizens for their continued commitment to community service and encouraged them to sustain efforts to improve livelihoods by maintaining cleanliness, enrolling in the community-based health insurance scheme (Mutuelle de Santé), combating the production and consumption of unsafe beverages, and preserving Rwanda’s cultural values.
