A fire broke out at Gisozi trading centre, commonly known as Agakiriro, in Kigali in the early hours of Sunday, October 25, destroying part of the facility used for carpentry, goods storage and handicrafts.

The fire started at around 2 a.m. in an area located within the premises of the ADARWA Cooperative.

Rwanda National Police’s Fire and Rescue Brigade responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

By morning, the flames had been put out, although smoke was still rising from some sections where the fire had not been completely extinguished. Firefighters continued working to ensure the area was fully safe.

Authorities had not yet disclosed the cause of the fire or the estimated value of the property destroyed.

The latest incident comes just over a year after another fire damaged businesses and property belonging to traders operating at Agakiriro.

Plans have been under discussion to relocate some activities at the centre to other locations, including the Masoro Industrial Park.

Since 2017, Gisozi Agakiriro has experienced eight fire incidents, raising renewed concerns about fire safety and the protection of businesses operating there.
