Rwanda’s national mountain bike team has departed for Cameroon to compete in the Grand Prix International Chantal Biya, one of Africa’s major cycling events, scheduled for August 7–8, 2026.
The team was handed the national flag on August 4 before travelling to Cameroon, with the delegation comprising professional and U23 rider Banzi Buhari, women’s elite rider Ntakirutimana Marthe, U23 women’s rider Iragena Charlotte and coach Byukusenge Nathan.
The third edition of the Grand Prix International Chantal Biya Mountain Bike Race will be held in Bagofit and Bertoua, in eastern Cameroon.
The competition is named after Cameroon’s First Lady Chantal Biya and was first introduced in 2001. It has since become one of the recognised mountain biking races on the African continent.
Rwanda’s participation comes as the country continues to develop its cycling programme and provide riders with opportunities to compete against some of Africa’s best cyclists.
The team will use the competition as part of its efforts to gain international experience and prepare for upcoming continental cycling events.
The road cycling edition of the Grand Prix International Chantal Biya, which attracts a larger field of competitors, is scheduled to take place from September 2 to 6, 2026.
