Rwanda has been awarded the hosting rights for the CECAFA Kagame Cup for two consecutive editions in 2027 and 2028, extending the country’s role as host of the regional club football tournament.
The decision was reached during a CECAFA Executive Committee meeting held at Mövenpick Hotel in Kigali on August 6, 2026. The meeting was chaired by CECAFA President and President of the Eritrean National Football Federation, Paulos Weldehaimanot Andemariam.
The decision follows Rwanda’s request to host the tournament for three consecutive editions, including the 2026 edition.
Rwanda hosted the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup, which featured 12 clubs from across the CECAFA region. Rayon Sports won the title after defeating Kenya’s Gor Mahia 2-1 in the final.
The CECAFA Kagame Cup was officially established in 1974 and has been known by its current name since 2002, when Rwandan President Paul Kagame began sponsoring the competition.
The tournament brings together leading clubs from CECAFA member associations, including Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Burundi, Djibouti, Somalia, Eritrea and Zanzibar.
The competition provides clubs with an opportunity to gain regional experience and prepare for CAF interclub competitions ahead of the continental season.
Rwanda’s selection to host the 2027 and 2028 editions further strengthens its position as a regular host of major regional football competitions.
