Brazilian-born outside hitter Matheus Bettim is in line to represent Rwanda after joining the national team’s provisional squad ahead of the 2026 African Volleyball Championship in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The 25-year-old, who is also known as Sekamana, has started training with Rwanda’s national team as head coach Frédéric Guérin prepares his squad for the continental tournament.
Bettim could be included in Rwanda’s final squad, although he is yet to complete the required documentation to become eligible to officially represent the country.
The outside hitter returned to Police VC ahead of the 2026/27 season after spending the previous campaign with Brazilian club Viapol Vôlei São José. He first joined Police VC in 2024 and has since become an important attacking option for the club.
Bettim was also part of Police VC’s historic run to the final of the 2026 African Men’s Club Championship in Kigali, where the Rwandan side finished runners-up to Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
Rwanda prepares for African Championship
Bettim’s potential inclusion would provide Rwanda with another attacking option as the national team steps up preparations for the 2026 African Championship.
Rwanda finished sixth at the previous edition in 2023, earning qualification for this year’s tournament without going through the qualifiers.
The 2026 championship is scheduled to take place in the Democratic Republic of Congo from September 7 to 21.
If his eligibility is completed in time, Bettim could make his international debut for Rwanda at the continental tournament.
