Four years after the death of Rwandan music star Yvan Buravan, his family, friends, fellow artists and fans are gathering in Kigali for a tribute concert celebrating his life and musical legacy.
Burabyo Yvan, popularly known as Yvan Buravan, died on August 17, 2022, at the age of 27 after battling cancer.
He died in India, where he had travelled for treatment after previously receiving medical care in Rwanda and Kenya.
The anniversary concert is being held on August 17 at Atelier du Vin as part of the “Turikumwe” campaign, an initiative of the YB Foundation that uses music and community gatherings to remember Buravan and promote solidarity with people affected by cancer.
Among the artists lined up to perform are Ish Kevin, who collaborated with Buravan on VIP, and Uncle Austin, who played an important role in supporting the late singer’s career.
The YB Foundation was established to preserve Buravan’s legacy and ensure that his music continues reaching new audiences. The foundation is also preparing to release some of the songs the singer recorded before his death but had not officially released.
Buravan’s last officially released song while he was alive was Big Time, which has now surpassed five million views on YouTube. Several of his unreleased recordings have subsequently been made public, including Ituro, VIP and Already Made.
He also featured posthumously on Intango y’Ubumwe by Junior Rumaga, alongside Mr Kagame, Fefe Kalume and Bull Dogg.
Buravan rose to prominence around 2016 with songs including Malayika, Bindimo and Ni Njye Nawe. His distinctive voice and emotionally driven songwriting, particularly on love songs, quickly earned him a large following.
His career also reached the international stage in 2018 when he won the Prix Découvertes RFI, becoming the first and only Rwandan artist to win the prestigious award, which recognises emerging African musical talent.
Known for blending Afro, R&B and pop, Buravan left a lasting mark on Rwanda’s music industry despite his career being cut short at a young age.
The anniversary event is therefore not only a remembrance of the singer, but also part of efforts to preserve and promote the musical legacy he left behind.
