APR FC have withdrawn from the 2026 FERWAFA Super Cup after rejecting the decision to change the competition from its traditional one-match format to a four-team tournament.
FERWAFA confirmed on Tuesday, August 18, that Mukura Victory Sports & Loisirs, who finished fifth in the 2025/26 BK Pro League, will replace the reigning champions.
The decision followed consultations between FERWAFA and the four top-ranked teams from last season — APR FC, Rayon Sports, Kiyovu Sports and Police FC — over the new Super Cup format. While Rayon Sports, Kiyovu and Police accepted the change, APR maintained its position that it would not participate in a four-team competition.
APR had argued for the traditional format, in which the league champions face the Peace Cup winners in a single match. Since APR won both the 2025/26 league title and the Peace Cup, the club would have faced league runners-up Rayon Sports under that arrangement.
FERWAFA, however, confirmed that the 2026 Super Cup would proceed as a four-team tournament, featuring two semifinals and a final. APR subsequently withdrew, paving the way for Mukura to enter the competition.
The new format will see Kiyovu Sports face Mukura in the first semifinal, while Rayon Sports will meet Police FC in the second.
Both semifinals will be played at Kigali Pelé Stadium on August 27. Kiyovu and Mukura will meet at 3 p.m., before Rayon Sports face Police FC at 6:30 p.m.
The final is scheduled for August 30 at Kigali Pelé Stadium, with kick-off set for 3 p.m.
FERWAFA has also announced that participating clubs will receive appearance fees and that the prize money for the competition has been increased, although the exact amounts will be announced later.
APR are the reigning Super Cup champions after defeating Rayon Sports 4-1 in the previous edition.
The withdrawal brings an unexpected change to a competition that was originally expected to feature the four leading teams from the 2025/26 league season, while giving Mukura an opportunity to compete for the inaugural Super Cup title under the new four-team format.
