Police in Gakenke District are investigating the death of a woman whose husband is suspected of killing her in a knife attack before sustaining injuries himself.
The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, August 19, 2026, in Gatagara Village, Jango Cell, Ruli Sector.
The deceased was identified as Dusabimana Marie, who was from Ruhango District. Her husband, Rukundo Innocent, 24, from Karongi District, survived and was taken to Ruli Hospital for medical treatment.
Residents said the couple had been living together for about eight months and had reportedly been experiencing domestic disputes, including accusations of infidelity.
Preliminary information indicates that the couple was found inside their room with serious injuries. A blood-stained knife was also reportedly recovered from the scene.
Rukundo is suspected of having attacked his wife with the knife before injuring himself. However, Police have not confirmed the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, and investigations are ongoing.
CIP Ignace Ngirabakunzi, Police spokesperson for the Northern Province, confirmed that officers responded to the incident but said there was not yet sufficient evidence to establish exactly what happened.
“We received the information and Police immediately went to the scene, but there is no evidence confirming that they killed each other. Investigators have therefore started examining the circumstances,” he said.
The couple had reportedly moved to Ruli Sector in search of work and were engaged in casual mining activities. They had been living together for eight months but had not legally formalised their marriage.
Police investigations are expected to establish the circumstances that led to the woman’s death and the injuries sustained by her husband.
