REG Women BBC have retained the Rwanda Women’s Basketball League title after completing a 4–0 sweep of The Hoops Rwanda in the Cheetah Energy RBL Playoffs final.
REG sealed the championship on Wednesday, August 26, defeating The Hoops 73–46 in Game 4 at Petit Stade in Remera. The result confirmed REG as champions after they had already won the opening three games of the best-of-seven series.
The victory gives REG a third consecutive league title and their fifth championship since the club was established in 2021, according to the tournament report.
REG, coached by Mukaneza Esperance, dominated the decisive game, with Kiyobe Chantal leading the champions with 16 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
The champions were particularly effective from three-point range, making eight attempts compared with The Hoops’ two. REG also led 27–12 in fast-break points and recorded six blocks against two by their opponents.
The Hoops were without Cyuzuzo Rebecca, one of their key players, as REG built a commanding lead that reached 30 points during the game.
The Hoops dominate individual awards
Although The Hoops missed out on the championship, their players and coaching staff collected several of the season’s individual awards.
Head coach Habiyambere Patrick was named Coach of the Year after guiding The Hoops to the final despite the team not being among the favourites at the start of the playoffs.
Mugisha Vivine Elisabeth was named Most Improved Player after scoring 214 points, collecting 99 rebounds and providing 67 assists in 639 minutes.
The Hoops’ Congolese player Feza Ebengo Isomi was one of the biggest individual winners. She was named the league’s leading rebounder with 288 rebounds and the top scorer with 269 points. She also won the Regular Season MVP award.
REG’s Malian forward Maiga Kadidia claimed the league’s main individual honour, being named Women’s Basketball League MVP. She finished the season with 180 points, 131 rebounds, 31 assists and 16 blocks in 329 minutes and 50 seconds.
APR’s Micomyiza Rosine and REG’s Kiyobe Chantal shared the award for most three-pointers, with 28 successful shots each.
Umuhoza Liliane was named Women’s Basketball League Referee of the Year.
In the final standings, The Hoops took silver and RWF5 million, while APR Women BBC finished third and received bronze medals and RWF3 million. REG received the championship trophy, gold medals and RWF10 million.
