RwandAir has cancelled two flights scheduled for Monday, August 31, following disruptions caused by an ongoing strike by aviation workers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.
The affected flights, WB452 and WB453, were cancelled because of operational constraints affecting air traffic control services at the airport, according to RwandAir.
The cancellations came as the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) strike entered its second day, disrupting operations at Kenya’s main international airport and affecting thousands of passengers.
RwandAir said affected passengers would be rebooked on the next available flights and apologised for the disruption.
The airline had also cancelled flights WB402 and WB403 on Sunday, August 30, citing air traffic control challenges at JKIA.
The ongoing industrial action has affected several airlines operating through Nairobi, with reports of widespread delays and cancellations. Kenya Airways, for instance, reported delays of more than six hours as it worked through a growing flight backlog.
The workers, represented by KAWU, are protesting unresolved employment-related grievances, including issues surrounding collective bargaining agreements, welfare and working conditions. Negotiations between the union and government officials were continuing on Monday, but the strike remained in effect.
Kenya Airports Authority has acknowledged the disruptions and advised passengers to confirm their flight status with airlines before travelling to JKIA.
RwandAir said it is monitoring the situation closely and working with relevant authorities to minimise the impact on passengers as operations at the Nairobi airport remain disrupted.
