President Paul Kagame has met senior United Nations officials to discuss the worsening security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its implications for Rwanda and the wider Great Lakes region.
Kagame held talks at Village Urugwiro with James Swan, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for the DRC and head of MONUSCO, and Huang Xia, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region.
According to Rwanda’s Office of the President, the discussions focused on the root causes of the conflict in eastern DRC and the need for a lasting solution to the region’s security challenges.
The meeting comes as Rwanda and the DRC continue diplomatic efforts to implement a peace agreement signed in Washington, United States, aimed at addressing the conflict and improving relations between the two neighbouring countries.
The parties have also been working on mechanisms to monitor and verify implementation of the agreement.
In August, Rwandan and Congolese delegations met in Geneva, Switzerland, to assess progress in implementing the Washington agreement signed on June 27, 2025.
During the Geneva talks, the two sides agreed to continue with two mechanisms intended to strengthen monitoring and verification of the agreement’s implementation.
The latest discussions between Kagame and the UN officials come as international and regional efforts continue to address the long-running conflict in eastern DRC, where armed groups and political tensions have repeatedly destabilised the region.
