Military commanders from Rwanda and Tanzania are holding talks in Nyagatare District aimed at strengthening security cooperation and improving coordination along the two countries’ shared border.
The 16th meeting brings together commanders from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) 5th Division and the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) 202 Brigade to review shared security concerns and identify ways to strengthen cooperation.
The Tanzanian delegation is led by Brigadier General Gabriel Elias Kwiligwa, Commander of the 202 Brigade, while Rwanda’s side is led by Major General Ruki Karusisi, Commander of the RDF 5th Division.
The talks are focusing on closer coordination, direct communication and joint efforts to prevent and address security challenges along the border.
Welcoming the Tanzanian delegation, Maj. Gen. Karusisi described the meeting as a reflection of the strong friendship, trust and military cooperation between Rwanda and Tanzania.
He said the countries’ shared border provides an opportunity to strengthen communication, promote peace and enhance security in the region.
Karusisi called for stronger ties between military commanders, increased joint training and direct communication channels to enable the two forces to respond effectively to emerging security threats.
Brig. Gen. Kwiligwa thanked the Rwandan side for the reception, saying the meeting demonstrates the strong military confidence between the two countries and progress made in implementing previous agreements on shared security concerns.
The Tanzanian delegation also visited the Inyange Milk Powder Plant in Nyagatare, where officials briefed them on the facility’s operations, production, market distribution and contribution to the local and national economy.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to securing the shared border, strengthening military cooperation and protecting communities on both sides.
The meeting is expected to result in practical measures to address common security challenges and further deepen security cooperation between Rwanda and Tanzania.
