Rwanda National Police has arrested 16 people suspected of carrying out street robberies and breaking into homes in Nyarugenge District, Kigali, following complaints from residents about a rise in attacks.
The suspects were arrested in Nyabugogo, Kigali, Ruliba and Mwendo cells during a security operation conducted in collaboration with local authorities and residents.
Police said the operation was launched after residents reported groups allegedly ambushing people on the road and robbing them of phones, money and other valuables, sometimes using violence.
The arrests were made between September 1 and 9, with all 16 suspects currently held at Kigali Police Station.
Kigali Metropolitan Police spokesperson CIP Wellars Gahonzire said cooperation from residents was instrumental in identifying the suspects.
He said the suspects were allegedly involved in robberies along the route from Nyabugogo through Giti cy’Inyoni to Ruliba, targeting people travelling early in the morning or returning home after daily activities.
Kamenge was identified as one of the areas where residents were particularly targeted.
Police said some of the suspects were also involved in stealing goods from moving cargo trucks, while others were arrested in Mwendo Cell over alleged house break-ins.
According to Police, some of the suspects admitted to robbing and assaulting residents and using illicit drugs.
Authorities said security measures have been reinforced in the affected areas, particularly during night hours, as efforts continue to prevent further attacks.
Police urged residents to remain vigilant and share information with security and local authorities about people suspected of criminal activity.
It also warned those involved in robbery and other crimes to abandon illegal activities and seek lawful means of earning a living.
