Rwanda’s Prime Minister, Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, held discussions with leaders of international environmental funds in New York on Thursday, September 24, 2026, as Rwanda seeks to strengthen cooperation in supporting its development priorities and environmental protection efforts.

The meetings took place on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Prime Minister Nsengiyumva is participating in the high-level session.

Nsengiyumva met with Mafalda Duarte, Chief Executive Officer of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), with whom he discussed Rwanda’s experience and achievements under the Green Gicumbi project.

The two also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation and increase financing for initiatives aimed at addressing the impacts of climate change. The discussions focused on enhancing Rwanda’s capacity to respond to climate-related challenges while promoting environmentally sustainable economic development.

The Prime Minister also met with Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, Executive Director of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, where he commended progress made in managing the fund and reaffirmed Rwanda’s continued support.

Rwanda continues to advocate for improved access to adequate and equitable climate finance to help countries address climate-related challenges and ensure that international commitments translate into practical and measurable results.

The engagements form part of Rwanda’s efforts to mobilize international financing and strengthen partnerships supporting climate resilience, environmental protection and sustainable development.
