Rwanda has been selected to chair the Group of 77 and China in 2027, pledging to use the position to strengthen cooperation and advance the interests of developing countries.
The decision was announced during the 50th meeting of G77 ministers held on September 25, 2026, which focused on the future of cooperation among developing countries.
Rwanda was represented at the meeting by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Olivier Nduhungirehe.
Nduhungirehe thanked the chair of the G77 and African countries for entrusting Rwanda with the responsibility of leading the group in 2027.
He said Rwanda, as one of the founding members of the G77, has for decades supported the group’s objectives and principles, particularly efforts to strengthen cooperation among developing countries.
Nduhungirehe said Rwanda understands the challenges developing countries face as they seek to accelerate their development, particularly at a time when the world is dealing with multiple challenges.
“Building on the spirit of cooperation that has defined this group, I assure you that the Government of Rwanda will fulfil its responsibilities and play its role with integrity, pride and dignity, in keeping with the trust placed in us by the members of the G77 and China,” he said.
He added that despite the difficult global environment, Rwanda was ready to work closely with G77 and China members, the group’s Secretary-General and its partners to find solutions and advance its objectives.
Nduhungirehe also thanked Uruguay, which currently chairs the G77, saying it had led the group during a period of significant challenges facing developing countries.
He said that during Uruguay’s chairmanship, the group continued to promote dialogue on international economic cooperation and cooperation among developing countries.
During Rwanda’s one-year chairmanship, Nduhungirehe said the country would focus on advancing the group’s agenda and following up on issues and interests affecting developing countries across various areas of international cooperation.
The G77 and China is a coalition of 134 developing countries that works to promote common positions in international negotiations, particularly on economic development, international cooperation and related global issues.
