Rwanda’s U-23 national team made a strong start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Sudan in the first leg of the preliminary round.
The match was played at Kigali Pelé Stadium on September 30, 2026, in front of home supporters who were still celebrating the senior national team’s 2-1 victory over Cape Verde the previous day.
Rwanda took the lead in the 10th minute through defender Niyigena Abdoul before Shingiro Honore doubled the advantage two minutes into the second half.
Sindi Paul Jesus completed the scoring in the 78th minute to give Rwanda a three-goal cushion heading into the return leg.
The match was played in rainy conditions during the opening minutes, but Rwanda, coached by Nshimiyimana Eric, quickly took control and created several chances that could have resulted in an even bigger victory.
Sindi Paul Jesus came close to scoring again when his free-kick struck the post, while Muhoza Daniel also hit the woodwork with a powerful effort.
Sibomana Sultan Bobo had several opportunities but could not convert them, while another goal from Shingiro Honore was ruled out for offside.
The second leg will be played on October 6, 2026, with Sudan facing the difficult task of overturning the three-goal deficit. Sudan will need to win by at least four goals to progress to the next stage.
