Two hundred new homes have been handed over to families in Ngororero District whose houses were destroyed by disasters in 2023.

The homes were officially handed over on Thursday, October 1, by Minister in charge of Emergency Management, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Albert Murasira, alongside district officials and other stakeholders.

The houses were constructed through the Contingency Emergency Response Component (CERC), implemented by the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) in partnership with the World Bank.

Murasira urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the houses and continue observing measures aimed at preventing and reducing the impact of disasters.

He also called on residents to remain vigilant as Rwanda enters a period expected to bring heavy seasonal rains.

The housing programme will continue in Ngororero and six other districts affected by the 2023 disasters, namely Muhanga, Rutsiro, Nyabihu, Karongi, Burera and Rubavu.

A total of 3,059 new homes are expected to be handed over to families whose houses were destroyed in the affected districts.

Overall, 5,096 houses have been repaired or rebuilt, benefiting more than 25,000 people affected by the disasters.

The 2023 disasters severely affected parts of Rwanda’s Western and Northern provinces, destroying homes and forcing many families to relocate.

The government provided rental accommodation to affected families for about two and a half years while reconstruction was underway.

The new homes are intended to provide safer and more permanent accommodation for families affected by the disasters while strengthening their resilience to future emergencies.
