Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Uwimana Consolee has urged older people not to be viewed only as beneficiaries of social support, but to continue contributing to national development by sharing their advice, knowledge and experience.
She made the remarks on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, during celebrations marking the International Day of Older Persons, which also coincided with the official launch of a month dedicated to citizen participation in planning.
The national event was held in Rutunga Sector, Gasabo District, under the theme, “The contribution and experience of older people: a foundation for sustainable development.”
Minister Uwimana said older people play an important role in families and the country, adding that the annual observance provides an opportunity to recognize their value, uphold their rights, pass knowledge from one generation to another and strengthen ties between generations.
She urged Rwandan families to value and care for older people, particularly those who are vulnerable.
“Caring for older people is not the responsibility of the Government alone. It is also the responsibility of families, especially children towards their parents. No government programme can replace the love and commitment of children and grandchildren,” she said.
Minister Uwimana also encouraged citizens to plan for old age early by saving through Ejo Heza and other social protection schemes, while emphasizing the Government’s role in supporting older people.
“The Government of Rwanda has put in place programmes to support the welfare of older people and their families, including VUP, Ejo Heza, Community-Based Health Insurance and other social protection programmes,” she said.
In Rwanda, a person aged 65 or above is considered an older person.
