The trial of Dr Vincent Bajinya, who is accused of crimes linked to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, is scheduled to begin at the Old Bailey in London on October 4, 2027.

Bajinya, 65, who is being held at Belmarsh Prison, appeared remotely at a pre-trial hearing on October 9, 2026. The trial is expected to last between eight and 12 weeks, although the start date is provisional.

He faces charges relating to genocide and six counts of murder, including allegations of crimes against humanity.

Prosecutors allege that Bajinya led or incited members of the Interahamwe militia to kill Tutsi in Kigali between April 6 and 13, 1994. He denies all the charges.

A further pre-trial hearing is scheduled for January 15, 2027, when the court is expected to discuss arrangements for his defence.

The case would be the first trial in the UK of a person accused of involvement in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The investigation into Bajinya began in 2019, following a request from Rwanda, and lasted seven years.

UK police said six other people remained under investigation over alleged crimes linked to the genocide, two of whom have been arrested.
