Rwanda’s Prime Minister, Dr Justin Nsengiyumva, on Saturday joined residents of Kicukiro District in voting for village-level leaders, as the country began electing local government representatives for a new five-year term.
Nsengiyumva cast his ballot at a polling station in Nyenyeri Village, Bwerankori Cell, Kigarama Sector, where eligible residents directly elected leaders to represent their communities.
The elections covered five positions on village executive committees: village head, social affairs and family welfare officer, security officer, information and civic education officer, and development officer.
Before voting began, election volunteers took an oath to fulfil their responsibilities in conducting the process. Candidates then presented themselves to voters, who cast their ballots before votes were counted to determine the winners.
Some residents said they were satisfied with the process and had chosen leaders they trusted to address community challenges and support local development.
The village-level elections are part of a wider process to select local government representatives. Elections at the cell level are scheduled for October 31, when residents will elect members of cell executive committees and council leadership, as well as representatives to sector councils, including women representatives.
The elected leaders will serve five-year terms, working with residents on local development, social welfare and community concerns.
