Youth volunteers in Gasabo District have been encouraged to continue addressing challenges affecting residents and to lead by example in promoting community development.

The call was made by Martine Urujeni, Kigali City Deputy Mayor in charge of Economic and Social Affairs, during the closing ceremony of a month-long youth volunteering campaign launched in October 2026.

Urujeni commended the young people for their contributions to national development and community welfare throughout the campaign, urging them to sustain their efforts beyond the designated month.

She also encouraged them to mobilise other young people to participate in volunteer activities, support vulnerable residents and help address problems affecting their communities.

More than 500 youth volunteers from Gasabo attended the closing ceremony, alongside local leaders and other officials.

Activities carried out during the campaign included awareness campaigns against substandard alcoholic drinks, drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and child trafficking.

The volunteers also supported vulnerable households by providing assistance, constructing and repairing homes, establishing kitchen gardens, planting trees and clearing drainage channels.

These initiatives were aimed at improving living conditions, supporting vulnerable residents and protecting the environment.

The activities highlight the role young people can play in tackling local challenges and contributing to the development of their communities.
