The African Union Commission has welcomed an agreement aimed at bringing Formula 1 racing to Rwanda, describing the initiative as an opportunity to boost African sport, attract investment and expand the continent’s role in hosting major international events.
In a statement issued on October 23 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, commended the Rwandan government for the initiative.
Youssouf said hosting major international sporting events could promote tourism, attract investment, develop African expertise and create new opportunities for young people.
He also highlighted sport’s potential to contribute to sustainable economic development, job creation, youth empowerment and stronger cooperation among African countries.
The AU Commission called for continued collaboration among member states, private-sector players and other partners to ensure Africa benefits from opportunities in the global sports economy.
The initiative aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions an integrated, prosperous and influential continent.
Formula 1 is one of the world’s leading motorsport competitions, attracting international audiences, sponsors and investment. Rwanda’s proposed involvement could create opportunities across tourism, hospitality and related services, although the scale of the benefits will depend on how the initiative is implemented.
Youssouf urged African countries and their partners to strengthen cooperation to maximise sport’s contribution to economic development and continental integration.
