Bishop Jean Marie Vianney Nsengumuremyi, former Vicar General of the Diocese of Nyundo, has been laid to rest following a funeral ceremony attended by Catholic leaders, government officials and hundreds of mourners.

The final farewell was held at Nyundo Cathedral Parish, bringing together bishops, priests, religious leaders, government officials and Christians from different parts of the country.

Nsengumuremyi died suddenly on August 30, 2026, in a death that shocked the Catholic community in the Diocese of Nyundo.

Bishop Anaclet Mwumvaneza of Nyundo said Nsengumuremyi died from complications related to low blood pressure.

He described the late bishop as a committed and exemplary priest who will be remembered for his dedication to work, service and his ability to live well with people from different backgrounds.

During his ministry, Nsengumuremyi served as education coordinator in the Kibuye pastoral zone, covering areas of Karongi, much of Rutsiro, and parts of Ngororero and Nyamasheke districts.

He also taught at Petit Séminaire de Nyundo.

His death leaves the Diocese of Nyundo mourning a senior cleric who had served in several pastoral and educational responsibilities within the Catholic Church.
