BK Arena has introduced clear dress-code rules for people attending events at the Kigali venue, ahead of Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema’s highly anticipated concert on Saturday.
The guidelines come as debates over concert fashion continue to attract attention on social media, with differing views over how far personal freedom in dressing should extend at public entertainment venues.
Under the new guidelines, BK Arena says attendees remain free to choose what they wear and express their individual style, but their clothing must be appropriate for a public setting.
The venue requires private parts of the body to be adequately covered and says transparent clothing must provide sufficient coverage.
It has also banned clothing carrying obscene words, images or symbols, as well as messages promoting hate, discrimination or terrorism.
The rules will be in effect as thousands of music fans are expected to gather at the arena for Rema’s concert, which is part of activities marking the conclusion of Kwita Izina 2026.
Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, will headline the show, with Rwandan performers Kivumbi King and Kenny Sol also scheduled to appear alongside DJ Senshi.
The concert follows Friday’s Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony in Kinigi, Musanze, an annual event that brings together conservationists, public figures and international personalities.
BK Arena’s announcement has added a new dimension to the anticipation surrounding the concert, putting the spotlight not only on the performers but also on what fans will wear when they arrive at the venue.
The issue of concert attire has recently generated debate online, with some people arguing that individuals should have complete freedom to dress according to their preferences, while others maintain that public venues should enforce standards of decency.
BK Arena’s guidelines seek to maintain a balance between personal expression and standards expected in a venue hosting large public gatherings.
As Rema takes the stage, the audience’s fashion choices are therefore expected to attract almost as much attention as the performances, particularly given the heightened public discussion surrounding concert dressing in Kigali.
