Senegalese basketball coach Cheikh Sarr has returned to Rwanda after being appointed head coach of REG Women Basketball Club (REG WBBC), which is preparing to compete in the 2026 Africa Women’s Basketball League (AWBL).

Sarr’s appointment comes as the club steps up preparations for the continental competition, which brings together some of Africa’s leading women’s basketball teams.

He will lead REG WBBC during the 2026/2027 season, including its participation in international competitions.

Sarr is familiar with Rwandan basketball, having coached the country’s men’s and women’s national teams between 2021 and 2025. His experience in domestic and international basketball is expected to strengthen REG WBBC as it prepares for the challenges ahead.

The club says it aims to represent Rwanda strongly at the AWBL, with Sarr expected to contribute through his experience and tactical approach.

The 2026 AWBL qualifying tournament is scheduled to take place from December 11 to 20.

REG WBBC enters the continental campaign after winning Rwanda’s women’s basketball league title for three consecutive seasons under former head coach Mukaneza Esperance. The club will be seeking to build on that domestic success and make a strong impression on the African stage.
