Distinguished recognition: A look at honorary doctorates awarded to prominent Rwandan leaders

Share with Others

In recognition of exceptional service to national development, leadership, and social transformation, several prominent Rwandan leaders and public figures have received honorary doctoral degrees from international universities.

Unlike academic doctorates earned through formal study, these awards are conferred as a mark of distinction, acknowledging outstanding contributions in areas such as governance, health, education, diplomacy, innovation, and national unity.

Below is a selection of notable Rwandans who have received honorary doctorates—some distinctions that may not be widely known.

Jeannette Kagame

On 25 January 2026, First Lady Jeannette Kagame was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in recognition of her exceptional contribution to public health, education, gender equality, and national unity.

The award was presented during UGHE’s 10th anniversary celebrations held at its Butaro campus in Burera District.

Mrs Kagame was commended for advancing inclusive education through the Imbuto Foundation, strengthening healthcare systems through continental women-led health initiatives, and promoting national cohesion through the Unity Club.

President Paul Kagame

On 5 June 2024, Yonsei University in South Korea awarded President Paul Kagame an Honorary Doctorate in Public Policy and Management, citing his leadership in Rwanda’s socio-economic transformation.

President Kagame has received multiple honorary degrees from universities worldwide. In 2005, the University of the Pacific in the United States awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Laws for his role in rebuilding Rwanda after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

In 2006, Oklahoma Christian University also conferred on him a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) in recognition of his commitment to peace and national development. He later received an Honorary Doctor of Law from the University of Glasgow in 2007, and a Doctorate of Humane Letters from William Penn University in 2012.

Prof Silas Lwakabamba

Professor Silas Lwakabamba, who served as Rwanda’s Minister of Education (2014–2015) and previously as Minister of Infrastructure, has received two honorary doctorates in recognition of his contribution to higher education.

In 2005, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Technology by Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland. Two years later, in 2007, Solent University in Southampton conferred on him an Honorary Doctor of Engineering.

Louise Mushikiwabo

The Secretary-General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) and former Rwandan Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr Louise Mushikiwabo, received an Honorary Doctorate from Yerevan State University in Armenia in October 2021.

The award recognised her role in advancing international diplomacy, strengthening relations between Armenia and the Francophonie, and promoting the French language globally.

Frank Habineza

Frank Habineza, President of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and a Member of Parliament, received an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities in 2013 from Bethel College/Bethel University in India.

The award recognised his advocacy for democracy, environmental protection, and human rights.

Claire Akamanzi

In 2018, Claire Akamanzi, former Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and current Chief Executive Officer of NBA Africa, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Concordia University in Canada.

She was recognised for her contribution to economic development, private sector growth, and investment promotion in Rwanda.

Ambassador Mathilde Mukantabana

In May 2023, Ambassador Mathilde Mukantabana, Rwanda’s envoy to the United States, received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from California State University, Sacramento, her alma mater.
