A nine-member delegation from The Gambia has visited Rwanda National Police to study Rwanda’s approach to traffic management, road safety and technology-enabled public services.
The delegation, led by Deputy Permanent Secretary Ebrima Colley of The Gambia’s Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, visited Rwanda National Police headquarters in Kacyiru on Wednesday, August 26.
The visit focused on traffic law enforcement, road safety management, vehicle technical inspection, driver testing and licensing, as well as the use of technology to improve traffic management and public transport services.
The delegation was received by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, DCG Jeanne Chantal Ujeneza.
Ujeneza said the visit provides an opportunity for Rwanda and The Gambia to exchange practical experience and identify approaches that can contribute to safer and more efficient road transport systems.
She highlighted technology as an important tool for improving law enforcement and public service delivery, noting that digital systems can reduce unnecessary human interaction, minimise errors, save time and promote transparency.
She also emphasised community involvement in road safety, saying public awareness and education on traffic laws are essential to encouraging road users to take responsibility for safer roads.
Colley said The Gambia chose Rwanda because of the progress it has made in traffic management and road safety. He said the lessons gained from the visit would inform efforts to strengthen transport policies in The Gambia.
During the study visit, the delegation toured Rwanda National Police’s Traffic and Road Safety Department and is scheduled to engage with departments responsible for motor vehicle technical inspection, driver testing and licensing.
The visit comes as Rwanda continues to use technology and integrated systems in traffic management and public transport regulation, making its road safety model a reference point for other African countries seeking to improve transport services.
