Togo’s President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé has praised President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo for their continued efforts in promoting African unity and integration.
President Kagame and Obasanjo were among leaders who attended the African Air Transport Convention and Exhibition held in Lomé, Togo, on June 15, 2026.
In a message posted on X on Tuesday, President Gnassingbé said the two leaders have consistently demonstrated commitment to strengthening African unity and advancing collective development efforts across the continent.
He said their participation in the event added value to discussions on the future of Africa’s aviation sector and broader economic integration.
“The African sky should not only be seen as a space for movement, but as a key driver of mobility, trade, competitiveness, and our continent’s sovereignty,” he said, stressing aviation’s role in Africa’s economic transformation and job creation for young people.
Gnassingbé added that stronger cooperation among African states would enhance resilience, accelerate development, and strengthen the continent’s ability to shape its own future.
President Kagame, in his remarks at the forum, said the meeting should reinforce Africa’s vision of building a more integrated air transport system to improve connectivity and facilitate trade across the continent.
He noted that despite long-standing discussions on connectivity and intra-African trade, significant barriers to air travel between African countries continue to hinder investment, commerce, and regional integration.
