A traffic accident described by witnesses as unusual occurred on Wednesday afternoon, April 15, 2026, in Kigali at Norvege, Ruliba, where a private vehicle carrying five people reportedly lost control, left the road, and ended up in a swamp while negotiating a bend.

Witnesses said the vehicle appeared to lift off the road before veering off, an incident they described as sudden and unexpected. All five occupants are reported to have survived, with those injured receiving medical attention.

Speaking to Umunota, Rwanda National Police spokesperson for traffic safety, CSP Emmanuel Kayigi, said preliminary findings suggest the driver was likely speeding on a downhill section with a sharp corner, leading to loss of control.

“All occupants survived. No fatalities were recorded. The vehicle was damaged, and the injured were taken to hospital,” he said.

Emergency responders evacuated the injured to medical facilities, including CHUK and hospitals in Nyarugenge District, where they are receiving treatment.

CSP Kayigi warned motorists against reckless driving, noting that speeding—especially on downhill sections and sharp bends—remains a major cause of serious accidents.

He urged drivers to remain vigilant and adopt defensive driving practices, stressing that responsibility for safety lies with the driver.

Police also encouraged passengers to caution drivers when they observe dangerous behavior such as overspeeding.
