Kiyovu Sports’ historic Super Cup victory, Diamond Platnumz’s return to Kigali and a heated debate over women’s dressing were among the stories that dominated Rwanda’s social media over the final weekend of August.
From August 28 to 30, the country’s sports and entertainment scene produced several major events that continued to generate discussion as the new week began.
Kiyovu end long wait for major trophy
Kiyovu Sports ended a 32-year wait for a FERWAFA-organised trophy after defeating Police FC 1-0 to win the 2026 FERWAFA Super Cup at Kigali Pele Stadium on Sunday.
Hakim Hamiss scored the decisive goal in the 84th minute with a spectacular bicycle kick, securing Kiyovu’s first FERWAFA-organised title since 1994.
The victory sparked celebrations among Kiyovu supporters, who turned the stadium into a sea of green and white as the club claimed the first major silverware of the new domestic season.
Kiyovu’s most recent trophy before the Super Cup was the 2022 Made in Rwanda Cup, which it won after defeating Rayon Sports 2-1.
Diamond Platnumz returns to Kigali
Tanzanian music star Diamond Platnumz returned to Kigali for the “Diamond Platnumz Experience”, three years after his previous performance in Rwanda.
The Saturday concert at the BK Arena parking area brought together Diamond and several Rwandan and regional artists, including Bruce Melodie, Ish Kevin, Nel Ngabo, Bushali and DJs from Rwanda and Uganda.
The event generated considerable discussion online, including Diamond’s late appearance on stage and the absence of The Ben, who some fans had expected to join him for their collaboration.
Women’s dressing sparks debate
The Diamond concert also triggered a wider debate over women’s dressing at public events.
Some female attendees were reportedly stopped from entering because of their outfits, with some asked to change while others were asked to add clothing.
The issue quickly spread across social media, with prominent Rwandan women expressing opposing views.
Mutesi Jolly, Miss Rwanda 2016, and former Miss Rwanda contestant Uwicyeza Pamella questioned the idea of imposing clothing choices on women, while social media personality Isimbi Alliance, popularly known as Alliah Cool, supported the expectation that women should dress appropriately in public spaces.
The debate continued well beyond the concert and became one of the weekend’s most discussed social issues.
Ambassadors of Christ marks 30 years
Ambassadors of Christ Choir held a major concert at BK Arena on Sunday as part of celebrations marking 30 years since its establishment.
The concert, held under the theme “God Painted Our Story”, attracted a large audience and featured performances of several of the choir’s popular gospel songs.
The choir was also joined by its junior ensemble, Ambassadors of Christ Choir-Junior.
The event marked the choir’s second major Kigali concert after its 1996 performance at Hôtel des Mille Collines.
Rwanda’s women’s volleyball team advances
Rwanda’s women’s national volleyball team maintained its unbeaten run at the African Championship in Nairobi, Kenya, defeating Burkina Faso 3-0 to reach the quarter-finals.
Rwanda had also completed the group stage without dropping a set.
The team was scheduled to face Ghana in the quarter-finals on September 1, with a semi-final place at stake.
Refugee camps conclude Intercamp Tournament
The fourth edition of the Intercamp Tournament concluded at Mahama Refugee Camp in Kirehe District after six days of competition.
The tournament brought together 46 teams and more than 720 athletes from eight refugee communities in Rwanda.
Competitions included football, basketball, volleyball, seatball, karate and taekwondo.
Mahama won the football title after beating Nyabiheke 1-0, while Mugombwa dominated volleyball. Nyabiheke won the men’s basketball title, with Mahama taking the women’s crown.
The tournament is organised by the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) to promote interaction and reduce isolation among refugee communities.
Gicumbi FC unveils squad
Gicumbi FC held its “Gicumbi Day” on Sunday, unveiling its squad and kits ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The Northern Province club played a friendly against Sunrise FC, with the match ending 0-0.
Hip-hop showcase attracts regional artists
The “I Am Hip Hop” showcase brought together more than 30 rappers from Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi at the Centre Culturel Francophone.
The two-day event featured established and emerging artists and ended each day with open-mic sessions, giving upcoming rappers an opportunity to perform.
Kenya Police Bullets and Kawempe Muslim reach CECAFA final
Kenya Police Bullets WFC and Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC reached the final of the CECAFA Women’s Championship in Kigali.
Kenya Police Bullets defeated South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars 5-0, while Kawempe Muslim beat Commercial Bank of Ethiopia 3-0.
Rwanda’s representative, Rayon Sports WFC, exited the competition at the group stage.
