The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Chief of Defence Staff, Gen MK MUBARAKH, received a delegation of senior officers from the Malawi Military College at RDF Headquarters in Kimihurura, as they began a study visit to Rwanda.
The visit is intended to broaden the officers’ knowledge and give them an opportunity to learn from Rwanda’s experience in transforming and modernizing its defence sector, peacebuilding and national development. Particular attention is being given to the use of technology to strengthen the country’s capacity to address various challenges.
The delegation is led by Colonel Joseph Mambo, Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor of the Malawi Military College.
In his remarks, RDF Chief of Defence Staff Gen MK MUBARAKH thanked the Malawian officers for choosing Rwanda as the destination for their study visit.
“I thank the Malawi Defence Force for choosing Rwanda for this study visit. I am confident that the discussions and activities you will take part in during your time here will broaden your knowledge and professional experience in the military field,” he said.
He said the visit reflects the longstanding cordial relations between Rwanda and Malawi, including strong ties and cooperation between the two countries’ armed forces.
Colonel Joseph Mambo said Rwanda was chosen because of the confidence it inspires, considering the progress the country has made over the years.
“If you want to learn about resilience, security and development, Rwanda is a good example because Rwanda is a light for all African countries,” he said.
After visiting RDF Headquarters, the Malawian officers toured institutions under the Ministry of Defence that provide welfare services to military personnel, including Zigama CSS, MMI and Ihahiro ry’Inzego z’Umutekano. The visits were intended to help them better understand the welfare services available to Rwandan military personnel and their families.
As part of the programme, the officers also visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi and the Campaign Against Genocide Museum, where they learned more about the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi and how it was stopped by the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA).
The study visit provides an opportunity for officers from the Malawi Military College to exchange knowledge and experience with their counterparts in the Rwanda Defence Force and gain a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s reforms in the defence and security sectors.
The visit is also expected to further strengthen relations and cooperation between the Rwanda Defence Force and the Malawi Defence Force.
