Rwanda’s Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) has signed a one-year agreement with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) in slaughterhouses, targeting early detection of livestock diseases and improved food safety.
The agreement, signed by MINAGRI Permanent Secretary Olivier Kamana alongside UNIDO representatives, signals a growing shift toward technology-driven solutions in Rwanda’s agriculture and livestock sector.
Funded by the Embassy of Hungary in Rwanda, the initiative aims to strengthen animal health surveillance systems, enhance meat quality control, and curb the spread of zoonotic and livestock diseases.
Officials say the integration of AI will enable faster and more accurate identification of disease symptoms during meat inspection processes, allowing authorities to take timely and targeted action.
The project is also expected to reinforce consumer confidence in animal products by ensuring stricter safety standards and improving traceability within the meat value chain.
