Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement Dr Jean Damascène Bizimana has urged Rwandans, particularly the youth, to reject alcoholism, drug abuse and other harmful behaviours, saying a healthy population is essential for sustainable development.
In a message ahead of Umuganura celebrations scheduled for August 7, 2026, Bizimana said the annual cultural event should go beyond celebrating agricultural achievements and serve as a reminder of the need to protect health, dignity and national values.
He said the fruits of development can only be enjoyed by a population that is healthy and productive.
“No Rwandan should fail to celebrate the achievements we have made through our own efforts. However, celebrating the harvest requires us to consider what can prevent us from moving backwards, because those who produce are healthy and strong people,” Bizimana said.
The minister warned that challenges such as consumption of illicit alcohol, alcohol abuse among young people, drug use, prostitution and other behaviours that undermine dignity continue to threaten social progress.
He called on families, communities and individuals to play their part in preventing such practices and promoting responsible lifestyles.
Bizimana also encouraged Rwandan girls to uphold dignity, good conduct and values that make them positive role models in their families and society, while urging young men to remain responsible, protect their health and contribute to national development.
He said building a healthy population is key to achieving stronger families, increased productivity and long-term national prosperity.
Umuganura, one of Rwanda’s major cultural celebrations, is observed every year to honour hard work, share harvests and celebrate achievements. The national celebration of Umuganura 2026 will be held in Rusizi District.
