The Rwanda National Police Fire and Rescue Brigade has trained more than 1,000 students and teachers from the ETEFOP Technical Secondary School of the Diocese of Ruhengeri in Musanze District on fire prevention and response.
The training is part of a nationwide awareness campaign aimed at equipping communities with knowledge on the causes of fire outbreaks, prevention measures, and basic emergency response techniques.
Participants were sensitized on fire risks associated with cooking gas and were trained on the proper use of different types of fire extinguishers.
Police Spokesperson in the Northern Province, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Ignace Ngirabakunzi, said effective fire response depends on quickly identifying the source and nature of a fire in order to contain it before it spreads.
“The intensity of a fire varies depending on its cause and what it ignited. Response measures are therefore guided by identifying the source quickly to limit damage before it spreads,” he said.
He urged participants to apply the knowledge gained, share it within their communities, and promptly report fire incidents to enable rapid emergency response.
The school administration commended the Rwanda National Police for the training, noting that the knowledge will not only benefit students but also extend to the wider community through knowledge sharing.
