Rwanda’s National Institute of Statistics (NISR) has won an international award for an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered project designed to improve labour data analysis and accelerate the production of employment statistics.

The institute received the Innovative Project for Impact Award at the AI for Good Global Summit 2026, held in Geneva, Switzerland, in recognition of its innovative use of AI to process and analyze labour market information in multiple languages.

The award-winning project uses AI to classify and interpret job descriptions and economic activities recorded in Kinyarwanda, English and French, enabling faster and more accurate processing of data used to produce labour statistics.

NISR said the technology is helping improve the speed, quality and reliability of official statistics, which are critical for national planning, policymaking and evidence-based decision-making.

The project was developed under the first phase of the Data Science Capacity Building Initiative, aimed at strengthening the use of data science and emerging technologies in Rwanda’s statistical systems.

The recognition underscores Rwanda’s efforts to integrate advanced technologies into public sector operations and leverage artificial intelligence to improve the generation and use of reliable data.

NISR said the achievement demonstrates its commitment to adopting innovative solutions that enhance the production of timely and high-quality statistics for national development.
