Rwanda international defender Niyigena Clement appears to be edging closer to a move abroad after remaining in Egypt following the conclusion of Amavubi’s recent training camp.
The defender, whose contract with APR FC has expired, did not return to Kigali with the rest of the national team delegation, fueling speculation that he is finalizing a transfer to an Egyptian Premier League side.
Amavubi concluded their training camp on Tuesday, June 9, with players departing to rejoin their clubs or return home. However, Niyigena remained in Cairo, with sources close to the player indicating that he is engaged in discussions over a potential move.
The 26-year-old is reportedly in advanced talks with Ceramica Cleopatra FC, one of Egypt’s top-flight clubs. The side finished fourth in the Egyptian Premier League during the 2025/26 season and is expected to strengthen its squad ahead of the new campaign.
Should negotiations be completed successfully, Niyigena will undergo a medical examination before signing a contract with the club.
The move would mark a significant step in the defender’s career after several impressive seasons with APR FC and the Rwanda national team. Known for his composure, aerial strength and consistency at the back, Niyigena has established himself as one of the country’s most reliable defenders.
His potential departure is likely to be a major setback for APR FC, which had been keen to retain him despite the expiry of his contract. The club previously blocked interest from Sudanese giants Al Hilal SC during the January transfer window in an effort to keep him in Kigali.
Negotiations over a contract renewal, however, failed to produce an agreement, paving the way for the defender to explore opportunities outside Rwanda.
If the transfer is completed, Niyigena will join a growing list of Rwandan footballers testing themselves in more competitive leagues abroad, while APR FC will be left searching for a replacement for one of the pillars of its defence ahead of the upcoming season.
