A teacher in Nyanza District has been arrested and is being held at Busasamana Police Station on allegations of stealing money from a colleague through mobile phone-based financial transactions.

According to colleagues, the suspect allegedly accessed a fellow teacher’s phone and used mobile banking services to borrow Rwf 75,000. The funds were then reportedly transferred to two other teachers in Huye District, who subsequently sent the money back to the suspect’s mobile money account.

One colleague said the suspect was familiar with the victim’s mobile banking PIN, which was allegedly used to authorize the transaction before the money was redirected.

The incident is said to have occurred at a primary school in Rwabicuma Sector, Nyanza District.

The victim reportedly discovered the transaction and immediately reported the matter to police, prompting the arrest of the suspect.

Southern Province Police spokesperson CIP Kamanzi Hassan confirmed the arrest, saying the teacher is under investigation for theft committed through electronic means, in coordination with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) and local residents.

Authorities have reiterated warnings against cyber-enabled crimes, noting that electronic fraud is punishable by law. They urged the public to uphold integrity in the use of digital financial services and engage in lawful income-generating activities.
