Police arrest man over false claims of killings in Nyagatare

Police have arrested an individual who circulated claims on social media alleging ongoing killings targeting motorcycle taxi riders in Nyagatare District, dismissing the information as false.

The suspect, identified as “Gad” on the social media platform X, posted a video alleging that moto riders in Nyagatare were being ambushed, robbed of their motorcycles, and killed, with perpetrators reportedly fleeing to Uganda. He further claimed that authorities were aware of the situation but had taken no action.

In response, Police refuted the allegations, stating that no such incidents had been reported and confirming that the individual behind the claims had been apprehended.

“Good morning. We inform the public that this information is not true. The individual involved has been arrested and is being investigated for spreading false information, as provided for under Article 39 of Law No. 60/2018 of 22/08/2018 on the prevention and punishment of cybercrimes,” Police said in a statement posted on X.

Authorities emphasized that spreading unverified or false information online is a punishable offense under Rwandan law.

Police urged the public to verify information before sharing it, warning that the spread of rumors can cause unnecessary panic and legal consequences.
