The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has arrested a health facility owner suspected of involvement in the death of a 26-year-old woman who died shortly after receiving an anaesthetic injection during a family planning procedure.

The woman had reportedly visited Inshuti Nyabikoni Health Post to have a contraceptive implant removed from her arm, according to her family.

She was administered an anaesthetic injection before the procedure, but reportedly died shortly afterwards.

RIB identified the suspect as Ndorimana Ethienne, the owner of the health facility. He was arrested and is being held at the RIB station in Karama as investigations continue.

RIB spokesperson Dr. Murangira B. Thierry said the deceased’s body was taken to the Rwanda Forensic Laboratory (RFL) for examination to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.

The examination has been completed, but authorities have not yet released its findings or confirmed the cause of death.

The woman was buried on August 11, 2026.

RIB has not indicated whether any other people have been arrested in connection with the incident as investigations continue.
