Rwandan rapper Riderman has urged young people to stay away from illicit alcoholic drinks locally known as “ibyuma,” calling on them to protect their health and use their energy to pursue productive goals.
He delivered the message on Saturday, August 29, during the monthly Umuganda held in Gahanga Sector, Kicukiro District.
Addressing young people who participated in the community work, Riderman encouraged them to make responsible choices and avoid alcohol and other activities that could undermine their health or limit their future opportunities.
“Young people should be a healthy generation, avoiding activities that can harm them or prevent some of them from achieving their goals,” he said.
He urged young people to channel their time and energy into activities that benefit themselves, their families and the country rather than consuming illicit drinks.
Riderman’s message comes as the government intensifies the “Hehe n’Icyuma” campaign, which seeks to raise awareness about the risks associated with illicit alcohol and encourage Rwandans, particularly young people, to make healthier lifestyle choices.
The rapper also entertained residents and other Umuganda participants with his music, combining the awareness message with entertainment during the community activity.
Other public figures, including influencer Fally Merci, comedian Rusine Patrick and DJ General Benda, also joined residents of Gahanga in the Umuganda as part of efforts to support community development and the campaign against illicit alcohol.
The participation of entertainers and influencers formed part of broader efforts to use public figures to reach young people with messages on health, responsibility and community development.
