The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has launched a three-day retreat aimed at strengthening gender equality and promoting inclusivity among women and men serving in the military.
The retreat, which began on June 8, 2026, is being held at the Rwanda Military Academy in Gako, Bugesera District, under the theme: “Promoting gender equality and inclusivity in the Rwanda Defence Force.”
The gathering has brought together female and male officers and personnel from various RDF units to assess progress made in advancing gender equality and inclusivity within the force and to explore ways of further strengthening related initiatives.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff during the opening session, the Chief of Reserve Forces, Major General Alexis Kagame, commended President Paul Kagame, the Commander-in-Chief of the Rwanda Defence Force, for his continued support and leadership in promoting gender equality and inclusivity across different sectors, including the military.
Maj Gen Kagame described the retreat as an important platform for reinforcing gender equality principles and empowering both women and men serving in the RDF.
He said the initiative reflects the RDF leadership’s commitment to building an institution founded on the values of equality, inclusivity and mutual complementarity, in line with Rwanda’s national development priorities and international commitments.
Over the three days, participants will review achievements made in promoting gender equality and inclusivity within the RDF, discuss measures to prevent and combat gender-based violence among military personnel and their families, and assess the implementation of the 2023 Gender Management Policy.
The retreat is expected to contribute to the continued development of a professional, inclusive and gender-responsive Rwanda Defence Force, while enhancing the welfare and effectiveness of its personnel.
