RwandAir has been fined 15 million Nigerian naira by Nigeria’s aviation regulator for failing to resolve a passenger’s complaint over damaged luggage within the required timeframe.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) announced the penalty on Friday, September 11, saying the airline had violated passenger protection regulations.
Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, announced the fine in a post on X.
The regulator also ordered RwandAir to compensate the passenger for the damaged bag and pay an additional $170 to cover essential expenses, in line with NCAA consumer protection regulations introduced in 2023.
The NCAA said the penalty followed the airline’s failure to address the passenger’s complaint within the period required under Nigeria’s aviation regulations.
The action against RwandAir comes as the NCAA steps up enforcement of passenger rights among airlines operating in Nigeria.
In December 2024, the regulator fined five airlines — Air Peace, Ethiopian Airlines, Arik Air, Aero Contractors and Royal Air Maroc — over various passenger service violations.
The cases involved delays in processing refunds, failure to comply with NCAA directives, lost or damaged luggage, baggage not delivered to passengers’ destinations, and flight delays and cancellations.
The NCAA has also fined Saudi Airlines six million naira for failing to resolve passenger complaints and comply with directives issued by the regulator.
