Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have provided free medical services and sports equipment to residents of the Malakal camp in Upper Nile State.

The initiative was carried out on Saturday, October 10, 2026, by troops from Rwanda Battalion 2 (RWANBATT-2), demonstrating their commitment to supporting local communities and promoting their wellbeing and sense of security.

Medical personnel from RWANBATT-2 examined patients, provided medicines and other necessary treatment, and offered health education, with a focus on non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. More than 107 people received medical assistance.

Speaking at the event, Malakal camp leader Peter Adieng thanked the organisers, particularly UNMISS and RWANBATT-2, for their continued support and cooperation with the community.

“This activity demonstrates strong cooperation between the Rwandan troops, UNMISS and the people of Malakal. The medical care we received today is very valuable, and we hope this partnership will continue,” he said.

RWANBATT-2 commander Lt Col Emmanuel Ndahiro said Rwanda’s approach to peacekeeping placed local communities at the centre of its activities. He stressed that peacekeeping missions should go beyond maintaining security to improving the welfare of the people they serve.

“Rwanda’s approach to peacekeeping puts people first. Beyond maintaining security, we are committed to supporting communities and creating opportunities to improve their wellbeing,” Ndahiro said.

Silvio Stephen, one of the beneficiaries, thanked the Rwandan troops for providing free medical care.

“We thank the Rwandan troops for treating us free of charge. We hope these medical services will continue because many people in this camp struggle to access healthcare and cannot afford treatment or medicines,” he said.

In addition to the medical outreach, RWANBATT-2 played a friendly football match against young people from the camp. The match aimed to promote unity, good relations and cooperation between the troops and the local community.
