The Rwanda National Police in the Southern Province has trained private security guards in fire prevention and safety, as well as other measures to improve their work in protecting people and property.

The police also urged employees of private security companies to uphold integrity, discipline and professionalism, warning against misconduct that could compromise public safety or undermine the trust of their clients.

The Southern Province Police spokesperson, CIP Hassan Kamanzi, called on private security guards to uphold professional values and fulfil their responsibilities diligently.

“Employees of private security companies should demonstrate integrity, respect the law and avoid behaviour that could endanger public safety,” he said.

The Huye District Police commander, SP Habimana, urged participants to put the knowledge they had acquired into practice to improve their performance.

“It is important for security guards to work closely with the public, share information promptly and contribute to preventing crime and other threats to security,” he said.

The training also covered fire prevention and safety.

CIP Murwanashyaka, who works in the Rwanda National Police unit responsible for firefighting, fire prevention and emergency rescue, taught participants about different types of fires, their causes, their consequences and measures to prevent them.

“Understanding the causes of fires and how to prevent them is essential to protecting lives and property. Security guards should remain vigilant and know how to respond when a fire breaks out,” he said.

Some of the participants said the training had equipped them with knowledge that would help them perform their duties more effectively.

Uwingabiye Alexis, an employee of ISCO Security, said the training had deepened his understanding of the conduct expected of security personnel.

“The training has equipped us with knowledge about proper workplace conduct, and we will apply what we have learned to fulfil our responsibilities more effectively,” he said.

Niyomugabo Moise, who works for RGL Security, said he had gained skills in identifying and preventing potential risks and reporting incidents promptly.

“I have gained knowledge that will help me identify potential dangers, prevent them and report promptly whenever I notice something that could threaten security,” he said.

The training aims to strengthen the capacity of private security personnel to uphold professional values, improve their performance and better protect people and their property.
