The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has doubled the prize money for this year’s Super Cup, with the winner set to receive Rwf40 million and the runner-up Rwf20 million.
FERWAFA announced the increase on Tuesday evening, raising the winner’s prize from Rwf20 million to Rwf40 million and the runner-up’s award from Rwf10 million to Rwf20 million.
Four teams will compete for this year’s title: Rayon Sports, Kiyovu Sports, Police FC and Mukura VS&L. Mukura VS&L joined the competition after APR FC withdrew.
The latest increase means the Super Cup’s top prize has quadrupled in less than a year. When the competition was held in January 2026, APR FC won Rwf20 million, while runners-up Rayon Sports received Rwf10 million.
Before that edition, the winner was awarded Rwf10 million and the runner-up Rwf5 million.
The increase in prize money applies to both the men’s and women’s Super Cup competitions.
This year’s tournament will also introduce a new format, with four teams competing for the title for the first time. Previously, the Super Cup was contested between the Rwanda Premier League champions and the Peace Cup winners.
Under the new format, the four teams will play two semi-finals, with the winners advancing to the final.
APR FC withdrew from the competition after objecting to the new format, saying it had prepared for a single Super Cup match rather than two.
The 2026 Super Cup will kick off on Thursday, August 27, at Kigali Pele Stadium.
Kiyovu Sports will face Mukura VS&L at 3 p.m., while Rayon Sports will meet Police FC at 6:30 p.m.
The final is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, at Kigali Pele Stadium, starting at 3 p.m.
The increased prize money and expanded format represent significant changes to the Super Cup as FERWAFA seeks to raise the profile and competitiveness of the competition.
