Jean Hubert Nkurayija Ishimwe, the former Tour du Rwanda Coordinator, has been elected President of the Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY), taking over leadership of one of the country’s most successful sports federations.

Nkurayija was elected during an Extraordinary General Assembly held on Sunday, May 31, 2026, where members of FERWACY convened to elect a new Executive Committee, Supervisory Committee, and Appeals Committee.

As the sole candidate for the presidency, Nkurayija secured 10 of the 11 votes cast, earning a four-year mandate to lead the federation.

He succeeds Samson Ndayishimiye, who had been serving as FERWACY president since November 2023, when an interim executive committee was elected to complete the term of the previous leadership headed by Abdallah Murenzi.

Nkurayija assumes office at a time when Rwandan cycling continues to strengthen its position on the continental and international stage, driven in part by the growing success of Tour du Rwanda and the country’s increasing role in hosting major cycling events.

Widely recognized for his contribution to the organization and development of Tour du Rwanda, Nkurayija is expected to build on recent gains and advance the federation’s efforts to develop cycling talent, expand grassroots participation, and enhance Rwanda’s reputation as a leading cycling destination in Africa.

The newly elected leadership will serve for the next four years and oversee the federation’s strategic programs, competitions, and preparations for upcoming regional and international events.
