Two major cases linked to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi are expected to come before French courts, involving Franco-Cameroonian writer Charles Onana and genocide suspect Madjaliwa Safari.
Gisagara Richard, a lawyer representing Genocide survivors, said preparations are underway for the two proceedings, which are expected to attract significant attention.
The first case is an appeal by Charles Onana following his 2024 conviction in France for publicly contesting the existence of a crime against humanity in relation to the Genocide against the Tutsi. His appeal is scheduled to be heard on September 2, 3 and 9, 2026.
Gisagara said the appeal is expected to be closely contested, recalling that the initial proceedings included attempts to shift the debate towards issues surrounding the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The second case involves Madjaliwa Safari, who is accused of participating in the Genocide against the Tutsi, particularly in connection with killings at Bigega in Nyanza District.
Safari is scheduled to face trial for the first time from November 17 to December 18, 2026, in proceedings expected to last about a month.
Gisagara told Rwanda Broadcasting Agency that the two cases are among the major genocide-related proceedings involving alleged perpetrators expected to take place in France during this period.
He said the legal team representing survivors is prepared for the proceedings and remains focused on seeking justice for the victims.
