Kigali Independent University (ULK) has launched PhD programmes to increase the number of experts capable of conducting advanced research and finding solutions to the country’s challenges, particularly in the economic sector.
The programmes were officially launched on October 12, when ULK and its Polytechnic branch opened the 2026/2027 academic year. The occasion also highlighted the need for education to equip students with the knowledge and skills required in the labour market.
ULK chief executive Prof. Dr Rwigamba Balinda said the programmes would give Rwandans access to advanced studies at home, eliminating the need to travel abroad to pursue doctoral degrees and enabling them to contribute more effectively to national development.
Balinda said the PhD programmes began on September 26, 2026, adding that they needed to be developed to a high standard to ensure graduates became experts capable of providing practical solutions to the country’s challenges.
“People would go abroad and spend many years away from their families, which was very difficult. We must therefore develop these programmes to the highest possible standard so that those who graduate become truly outstanding experts,” he said.
Students enrolled in the programmes also expressed optimism that the knowledge and skills they acquire would help them address challenges in their respective fields.
Runguyeneza Fidel, a ULK student, said he expected the programme to enable him to contribute to Rwanda’s development, particularly in the economic sector.
“My expectation is to contribute to the country’s development, especially through a PhD. Pursuing this programme means seeking solutions to the problems we identify, particularly in the economy, which is my field of study,” he said.
In addition to its PhD programmes, ULK continues to offer undergraduate and master’s degree programmes, while ULK Polytechnic focuses on technical and vocational education and training.
