Kigali on Saturday evening hosted the Africa Cycling Excellence Awards, celebrating the continent’s top cyclists of 2025. The event, held at Zaria Court, marked the first time Rwanda has staged this prestigious ceremony.

Dr. Yao Allah-Kouamé, President of the African Cycling Confederation (CAC), said 2025 has been a landmark year for African cycling, with Rwanda hosting the Cycling World Championships earlier this year.

“It was a grand celebration that showcased what Africa can achieve when leaders put their people first,” Dr. Yao said. “I thank President Kagame for his role in making this possible and for showing the world that Africa can shine.”

Following the success of the World Cycling Championships, Rwanda was chosen to host the Africa Cycling Excellence Awards for the first time, organized by CAC to recognize outstanding performances across the continent.

Winners of the 2025 Awards

In the men’s category, Biniam Girmay from Eritrea was crowned Africa’s best male cyclist, while the women’s award went to Le Court Kim from Mauritius. Eritrea’s national team was also honored as the continent’s top cycling team for 2025.

In East Africa, Charles Kagimu of Kenya won the male category, and Odette Nsengiyumva of Burundi was named the top female cyclist. Rwanda’s own Vainqueur Masengesho and Xaverine Nirere were recognized as the country’s top performers in 2025.

Rwanda Cycling Federation applauds winners

Samson Ndayishimiye, President of the Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY), praised the winners and emphasized the role of cooperation in elevating African cycling.

“When African nations work together, the results are remarkable,” he said. “These awards show that with discipline and collaboration, African cyclists can achieve success at the highest levels.”

The 2025 ceremony in Kigali set a precedent and will return to Rwanda at the end of next year, 2026, continuing to honor excellence in African cycling.
